Online Poker Terminology Guide

Poker has been around for ages and has produced a loyal following. What flavour of poker we play changes with time, but the core game remains the same. As a result, you probably know all the short hands and terms already. However, online poker is a little different. It has a culture of its own, given the unique format it takes when played online.

As a result, many poker fans may find that they need a quick catch-up on poker terminology. If you plan on playing on an online or live casino poker table, you will want to know the following terms and what they mean. Fortunately, we are here to help! Here are some of the most important phrases and terms needed for online poker play.

Flop

When all the betting is done and the round is ready to begin, this term comes into play! Flop refers to the first three community cards dealt by the dealer and placed on the table. At this point, you probably know whether you will win or lose the round.

The Flop is also important if you are playing side bets. Many live casino games, particularly ones made by Evolution Gaming, include a bonus bet that targets the Flop. If you play that side bet, your two personal and three community cards are evaluated. If they form a Pair of Aces or better, then you score an extra prize!

Turn / Fourth Street

In Texas Hold’em and its live casino variants, the Turn lives up to its name. It can very quickly turn the situation on its head, and turn the losers of yesterday into winners! This term is also known as Fourth Street, as it is the fourth community card placed on the table. At this point, you have added onto your ante wager and are waiting for the fifth card to be drawn. Whether you succeed or fail is down to your strategy and Lady Luck!

River / Fifth Street

Rounding out the community card names, we have River. Despite plenty of history with Online Casino, Online Gambling & Variations, we are uncertain where this term comes from. It marks the draw of the final, fifth community card, which explains the name Fifth Street. At this point, the round is over, and you know for sure if you have won or lost. Clear your head and get ready: the next round is about to begin!

5+1 Bonus

On some tables, you will see a 5+1 side bet offered. This bet can most often be seen on Caribbean Stud poker variants, though not always. You win this bonus bet by getting at least a three-of-a-kind five-card poker hand. The poker hand is formed using your five drawn cards, as well as the dealer’s face up card. This side bet allows you to win up to a 1000:1 prize, at the cost of a 91.44% RTP.

6 Card Bonus

Part of what makes online poker so exciting is the ability to play less popular poker formats. One of these is Three Card Poker, a much simpler variant of the original game. Here, both you and the dealer receive three cards each, with the stronger hand taking the win.

6 Card Bonus combines your three cards and the dealer’s three cards after they are revealed. The goal is to form the best possible five-card poker hand out of those six cards. The better the hand, the better the payout, with the ability to earn up to 1000:1! Interestingly, the RTP works out to be the same as the 5+1 Bonus in Caribbean Stud, which is 91.44%.
