Hotline Slot Review

When we first booted this slot up, we thought we were in for a treat. The intro video, the fake fuzzy TV screen effect, and the promise of an 80’s Miami setting? We had high expectations, but ones that sadly did not fully materialise. The background image and symbol designs are decent, but don’t really fit in with the rest of the game.

So, NetEnt’s release failed to create an interesting theme. But what about gameplay? It has its good and bad sides. Hotline’s RTP can be set between 96.13% with only one active hotline, or 97.04% with all three active. The rest of the special features are far less interesting: expanding Wilds, re-spins, and free spins are all bonuses we have seen multiple times before. If Lady Luck is on your side, you could win the maximum prize, worth 2800x your total stake.

We never felt this conflicted about a slot before. It feels like every good step is followed by a bad one, which leaves Hotline painfully average. It has fantastic music, but a boring background image. The RTP is fantastic, but available special features are bland and uninspired. You can win up to 2800x your total stake, but you’ll probably be bored to tears trying to win it.

Here’s the Facts

Despite having a medium variance, the game can be quite shy with its bonuses. Some of this may have just been rotten luck, but after testing it for a while, we think its intentional. Hotline can provide some solid pays even during normal gameplay, without any special features. As a result, when a bonus does appear, NetEnt wants it to feel awesome.

You can set your coin range between ₹1.00 and ₹100.00 per spin. By changing your coin value, bet level, and number of active hotlines, players can adjust their own total bet. This lets you play for as little as ₹15, or as much as ₹4500 for each spin. This kind of betting spread allows for every type of gambler to find what they are looking for.

Available icons include a bracelet, a necklace, a crown, two stylish detectives, and an elegant jewellery thief. The thief is the most valuable symbol, but only pays 200 coins for a five-of-a-kind win. Meanwhile, the bracelet is the lowest paying icon, at only 20 coins for a five-of-a-kind pay. It’s fair to say that, without the inclusion of bonuses, that 2800x jackpot would remain nothing but a pipe dream.

Special Features

Hotlines: A hotline is a bonus bet that gives you the chance to activate expanding Wilds and re-spins. You start with one hotline automatically enabled. To turn on two or three at once, you have to double or triple your existing wager.

Expanding Wilds & Re-Spins: If a Wild lands on a highlighted hotline, it will expand to cover the entire reel. Expanded Wilds award a re-spin. The re-spin is played again if another expanding Wild appears on the board. This continues until the playing field is full of expanded Wilds, or no new re-spins are played.

Free Spins: Collect three Scatters in the first, third and fifth reel to win seven extra turns. During free spins, expanding Wilds do not activate re-spins. Instead, they become sticky, and remain in place until the special feature ends.

What’s our Take?

We desperately wanted to like it more than we did, but we had to remain objective. It does some things well, but it also fails to deliver on its buddy-cup 80’s theme. Beyond the detectives and the jewellery thief, every other symbol looked out of place. The background image also has no animations, which feels like a major oversight on NetEnt’s part.

We also believe this is the first time a bonus bet special feature is debuting in a NetEnt slot. If so, then it will not face a warm reception, we’re afraid! There are times when Hotline can shine brightly, but those are few and far between.

If you’re looking for something to temporarily occupy your time, this game can be a good time waster. But we would not recommend it for real money play – not when there are so many better NetEnt releases to enjoy. You can better play with real money at slots like Eggomatic.
