Emperor of the Sea Slot Review

Oriental themed slots have seen a surge in popularity in recent years. As the massive Chinese market opened to our favourite providers, they were quick to capitalize on the new audience. Microgaming was no exception to this rule, and this game was their most successful attempt yet. Join the fierce water dragon on a journey across the waves in a quest for big wins!

Emperor of the Sea’s RTP is 96.28%, which is above the current industry average. To assist in their quest, several special features are available to players. Stacked Wilds can appear both during regular gameplay and while free spins are being played. Furthermore, the free spins round also shows off both Rolling Reels and Growing Wilds. Make good use of all these bonuses, and you’ll be able to walk away with an 1875x jackpot prize!

Visually simple but thematically interesting, this Microgaming release faces an uphill battle. There aren’t any mind-blowing animations to capture gambler imaginations. The theme and art-style are purposefully made to look like old Chinese and Japanese artwork. Meanwhile, gameplay is nothing special, but it can award some good prizes. Pay close attention to the special features! Winning the jackpot without them is impossible.

Here’s the Facts

The slot has a medium volatility, with a clear focus on the available bonuses. It would be surprising if that wasn’t the case! After all, stacked Wilds can be a game-changer by themselves. Add the extra mechanics that come attached with free spins, and you’re in for a very lucrative time. Rolling Reels are always a welcome sight, especially when you get lucky and land lots of stacked Wilds.

In an effort to optimize their release for mobile devices, Microgaming boiled down changing your bet to a dial. But if they were going to go that route, they should have just let players pick actual cash prizes. Instead of the current model, where Emperor of the Sea auto-cycles coin value, coins per payline and the number of active paylines for them. You can stake between ₹38 and ₹4400 on each spin. Gamblers can also have 38, 58 or 88 active paylines at the same time.

Symbol designs are a mixture of playing card royals and unique, Oriental-inspired icons. From the regular symbols, the sea dragon is the most valuable icon. That said, a five-of-a-kind Scatter win will blow it out of the water, and put you closer to the jackpot. The jackpot is worth 1875x your total stake.

Special Features

Stacked Wilds: It’s just what it says on the tin! Wilds appear stacked on the playing field, both during regular gameplay and free spins. It increases your odds of winning big, as Wilds can replace any symbol except the Scatter.

Free Spins: Collect three or more Scatters to win some great cash prizes and eight free spins. During this special feature, both Rolling Reels and Growing Wilds are active.

  • Rolling Reels: With this mechanic, it is possible to land multiple consecutive wins for the price of a single spin. Icons part of the win disappear, and new ones take their place.
  • Growing Wilds: On each free spin, all Wild stacks are increased by one Wild, for a maximum of 15 extra Wilds on each reel. This increases the chances of a Wild stack appearing on the board, but does not guarantee it.

What’s our Take?

Credit where it’s due, Microgaming has avoided the most stereotypically Chinese themed symbols. In fact, the whole slot feels like a big theatre play. Not everyone will find this game charming, we’re well aware of that. But it won us over with its calming tunes and a take on an overdone theme that doesn’t make us roll our eyes. We swear, if we see one more gold and red release with an Oriental theme..

Moving on! Despite its medium volatility, gameplay is very clearly focused on special features. Getting Stacked Wilds outside of free spins is a nice touch. It allows players to land some big wins here and there. Emboldens them to raise their stakes and try harder. But if you’re hoping to land the jackpot, there’s no replacing free spins. Emperor of the Sea is not perfect, and we’ll never claim otherwise. But we’d still recommend it as a relaxed, enjoyable experience.
